A spectacular and important piece of haute couture, ‘The Elisabeth’ by Dior haute couture from the Autumn Winter 1954 collection is a breathtakingly beautiful example of Dior when under the direction and design of Christian Dior himself. The dress is a vision in fine ‘tulle d’illusion’ and seems cloud-like in form with its gathered bands of tulle, seemingly secured by a row of black velvet bows running down the front of the dress. Offering a flattering and undulating neckline, a sharply figured waist and the full, bell-like skirt of the 1954 collection designed by Monsieur Dior, this strapless dress is an exceptionally rare piece of haute couture by the King and one of the most romantic, dreamlike examples of the greatest couture house in the World at its apex.
A great number of images from the 1954 collections are available and show Dior fitting his haute couture dresses before the shows, taken by Life magazine for a special feature on the World’s greatest couturier. Two such shots are shown within the gallery, along with an image of the only other Elisabeth known to exist; a version in blue within the permanent collection of the Dior couture house.
