This glorious dress is a superb example of Pierre Cardin haute couture and the modernism of couture in the 1960s, which remains incredibly contemporary today. The dress is created from the finest black silk, with an asymmetric neckline and wonderful pleating stemming from the single shoulder combining the idea of a ‘goddess’ dress with something clean, crisp and modern. The shoulder details the original, removable silk ribbon which can also be used to belt the waist, and features a secondary skirt set beneath the dress, giving the illusion of a much higher hem line without revealing more than is desired.
Cardin, alongside Courreges, was one of the great modernisers of fashion throughout the 1960s and his haute couture pieces were indicative of the new, luxurious approach to fashion in the swinging Sixties.
